James Hunter (Jim) Wood
MD, FACS, FAAP
Dr. Wood is a Louisiana native, having grown up in Ruston, Covington, and Baton Rouge. He graduated as co-valedictorian from Parkview Baptist School in 1995 and obtained his bachelor's degree from LSU in 1999. After graduation from LSU, Dr Wood attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He then completed a surgical internship at Vanderbilt, followed by general surgery residency at the University of Colorado Denver and pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern.
Dr Wood's practice includes all aspects of pediatric general and thoracic surgery. He has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery for newborns and young children, and he has helped establish the first pediatric robotic surgery program in the Baton Rouge region.
Dr Wood is board certified in pediatric surgery and general surgery. He is a member of the American Pediatric Surgery Association and a specialty fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He will be inducted as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in October 2016. To date, he has published thirteen articles and three book chapters, and his research has been presented at national and international academic meetings.
Dr Wood has a longstanding commitment to caring for the underserved of our local and global community. He has worked in clinics and hospitals in Venezuela, Peru, Cameroon, and Kenya, and he currently travels to Haiti every six months to provide surgical care for children in Port-au-Prince. He also serves on the board of directors for Medical Centers of West Africa and is a member of the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons Pediatric Surgery Council. His wife, Dr Amelia Wood, is an associate program director for the Our Lady of the Lake pediatric residency and serves as the director for global health.
Dr Wood and his family are active in many aspects of Baton Rouge community life, and they are members of First Presbyterian Church. Outside of medicine, Dr Wood has a wide range of interests, including music, literature, woodworking, traditional bow hunting, gardening and even raising chickens in his backyard.
